Cleanings
Forest tending of plantations and sapling stands, aimed at shaping the needed and consistent with the habitat: species composition, type of species mixture, restocking structure, density level, and also the improvement of saplings quality.
Early cleaning (plantation cleaning)
Forest tending works in stands at the age of up to about 10 years, i.e. before they reach canopy closure.
Late cleanig (sapling stand cleaning)
Forest tending works in stands at the age from up to about 10 years to about 20 years, i.e. in the period from the canopy closure to the beginning of their natural selection.
Allowable cut
The amount of wood to be harvested as it is specified in the forest management plan or in the simplified forest management plan, resulting from forest renewal needs, forest tending and protection, and the principles of sustainability and continuity of forest use (Forest Act Art. 6 paragraph 1, item 9).
Annual allowable cut by volume in the State Forests is the volume of forest use in a given year, determined on the basis of forest management plans, as the total volume of allowable cuts in individual forest districts (indicative value is about 1/10 of allowable cut set for 10 years). This figure is variable and it depends on the condition of forest. The sum of annual allowable cuts in the forest district must be balanced in a 10-year period, i.e. at the end of the current forest management plan.
Annual allowable clear-cut by volume in the State Forests is the sum – on average related to one year – of allowable clear-cuts in individual forest districts. The allowable clear-cuts for particular forest districts are determined in forest management plans as limited quantity that cannot be exceeded throughout (basically 10 years) the whole effective operating periods of these plans.
Annual allowable cut for intermediate cutting in the State Forests is the sum – on average related to one year – of indicative allowable cuts of intermediate cutting in individual forest districts.
Annual allowable cut for intermediate cutting by area in the State Forests is the sum – on average related to one year – of allowable cuts of intermediate cutting in individual forest districts; allowable cuts of intermediate cutting for individual forest districts are determined in forest management plans as obligatory quantity to be achieved throughout (basically 10 years) the whole effective operating periods of these plans.
Commercial forest stand
Specifies the breeding objective of forest management, finally for the age of felling maturity in the form of proper sequence of primary species participation recorded progressively (e.g. record GTD: So-Db means that at the felling maturity age of a given stand the dominant species should be oak, and the co-dominant should be pine).
Colony (natural regeneration)
The youngest, natural generation of trees under the stand canopy, not exceeding 0.5 m of height.
Clear-cut area
Forest area which has been cleared of all trees due to timber harvesting; an area scheduled for renewal.
Closure
Adjoining tree crowns.
